Making Lye-water

Lye water is basically a mixture of sodium hydroxide and water. The reason behind pre-mixing these ingredients is to ensure a complete reaction when adding it to the soap making oils. In all instances, appropriate safety equipment (goggles and gloves at a minimum) should be worn. This could save you a loss of pain or even your eyesight.

The more common name for sodium hydroxide is Caustic Soda and is generally available at most hardware stores.

Soap is basically an emulsification of fats, of water and lye.

Lye was originally leeched from ashes and was an extremely toxic and dangerous to handle. Modern lye is not much better and is more commonly known as sodium hydroxide or caustic soda.

The basic process it to find yourself a basic recipe. The first one I used was made entirely from ingredients I had laying around the house...with the exception of the lye.
